Description

Product Description

The experience of meaningful coincidences is universal. They are reported by people of every culture, every belief system, and every time period. Synchronicity examines the evidence for the human influence on the meaningfulness of events, and the way the modern computational model of the mind predicts how we create meaning.

It demonstrates that these events, based on the activity of the mind, are caused by the person who perceives them.

In this fascinating work, you will:

  • Learn to use your amazing ability to create synchronistic events
  • Discover how your mind creates the reality you experience
  • Unlock your brain''s vast resources of connectivity and creativity
  • Change from living as a separate being to living as a part of the unified whole

Synchronicity will show you how you already create events around you, and make you a conscious co-creator of your reality. Dr. Surprise describes the miracles of your brain''s processes, merging the worlds of modern physics and ancient mysticism to reveal abilities you have always possessed, but which were not fully understood--until now.

Learn to make reality dance to the rhythms of your thoughts.
  • Review

" Synchronicity is teeming with delightful and often compelling surprises about the nature of meaningful coincidences in contemporary life. The author''s prose is playful, provocative, and profound. Though you may not agree with all of Professor Surprise''s conclusions, this book should be required reading for anyone wanting to understand the magnificence and mystery of synchronicity."
--Gary E. Schwartz, PhD, professor of psychology and medicine, The University of Arizona, and author of The Sacred Promise

"An interesting mix of mythology, neuroscience, and common sense, this book takes a serious, but light-hearted look at the way synchronicity works and the degree to which it can be controlled. Going well beyond the ideas of Jung, synchronicity''s discoverer, psychotherapist Surprise draws on anthropology, String Theory, and Walt Disney to make the case that our internal states do effect external events...."
    --Anna Jedrziewski, New Age Retailer

I heard the tail end of Dr. Surprise''s recent appearance on the Coast to Coast AM radio program and was intrigued by his assertion that he has approached the phenomenon of synchronicity from a strictly scientific perspective. So I bought the kindle version of this book. Although the positive reviews are from "verified purchasers," I have a hard time believing they''re not friends of the author. As another skeptical reviewer has noted, there is nothing scientifically sound in Dr. Surprise''s claims about synchronous events. He waves away Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and the whole of ALL religious traditions with a flick of his hand and proceeds makes tedious, unhelpful, unproven, illogical assertions in a flip way. The book is highly repetitive, uses smugness as a substitute for intelligence and assumes the reader is interested in reading mundane personal anecdote after mundane personal anecdote about the author''s daily life. I kept skimming thinking there had to be SOMETHING useful but found nothing. However you personally view synchronous events in your own life it''s bound to be more enlightening than what you''ll find here.

I felt the book offered incredible insight into synchronistic events (SEs), and gave me a framework for understanding how SEs work. What I’ve read here gels well with other work I’ve read on a variety of subjects, from neuroscience to metaphysics. It’s a nice bridge.

The author is pretty harsh on religion—to a comical degree. He uses “The Flying Spaghetti Monster” as his prime example of how religion manipulates people, and refers continuously to religion in general as being nothing more than a tool to manipulate populations. If was off-putting, and he must have realized it would be. He caveats his commentary in a way that is meant to make one feel that being offended is a sign of being closed minded.

At times in the book the author seemed to lack self awareness while making statements that essentially ridiculed people who profess any sort of faith. I think he’s a well-meaning guy, but his take on this can be chokingly ironic at times. He makes statements and comments that he apparently does not realize are direct contradictions to what he’d said only a sentence or page before. I started noting these in comments on various passages, and could likely write a book of my own on the topic, at this point.

Still, I enjoyed the book, and took a great deal out of it that is useful and helpful to me. I recommend it to anyone curious about synchronicity, and offer only the caution that the author is anti-religious and a bit snarky and closed minded on the subject.

Synchronicity, by Kirby Surprise, is an enjoyable ride through the world of synchronistic events (SEs) if you are willing to take that ride. If you picked up this book to know what Kirby thought is going on with SEs, then this book is for you. But if you wanted a mysterious tome of Synchronistic Magic, then you may be either: disappointed because this book doesn''t give a nice stack of magic recipes, or blown away because it delivers if you take it on the fun side.

I was enjoying this book very much. cruising through chapter seven (The Big Picture) as he was building on various scientific theories. I just finished his Flatlanders and the Cone example, when after he introduced the Archetypes and Thoughtforms, he let me have it.

My own thoughts causes SE effects around me.

It is not like he haven''t been telling me this all along, but it wasn''t until this moment that the thought finally sank in. Adding String Theory, and M- and N- Space, didn''t help his case, in my view. Frankly, it sounded a bit like a psychic using quantum physics to explain how psychic powers work.

However, chapter 9 (Mystical Mumbo Gumbo) was comforting. He wasn''t out to explain SEs, but to present a possible explanation to the synchronicity phenomenon that might exist just outside our universe. By the way, I happen to agree with his examples of the Pastafarians and the priests of science, so I opened my mind to the possibility. But just wide enough.

The last chapter, Practical Magic, is the perfect way to finish this book. However, if this is the only chapter that you read, it would have been unproductive. I agree with Kirby''s quote:

"Reading the book is causing explosions of SEs around the readers, as intended."

After I finished this book, I have been noticing more SEs myself, and I haven''t even played the seven games in the last chapter. I''ll keep all his advices in mind, specially this one:

"Don''t believe the game you create."

Synchronicity is well-written and amazingly easy to read. It doesn''t tell the reader to change their lives, as if it were a mystical cure-all, but it informs and alters the way people perceive their surroundings because people are already innately capable of creating and enjoying the events that fill their environment. I enjoyed the anecdotes and sensible writing style that makes it educational reading material without becoming a textbook. It was highly recommended by my friends and I recommend it to anyone who has ever taken an interest in the way a person, especially how the reader, thinks and perceives.

The author claims to be a scientist yet gives no research findings that he has conducted. The population that he deals with are prisoners with delusions and a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. He extrapolates from work with these prisoners to come up with a model for "SEs" (synchronistic events) that mentally healthy individuals can create for themselves. His book is anything but scientific. He uses pejorative terms like "primitive societies" who believe in "superstition" to explain belief systems that differ from his own; he obviously has no understanding of or interest in learning about other beliefs beyond his superficial ideas about them. He tries to explain spiritual experiences based upon his very limited understanding of psychological theories. His approach to synchronicity is devoid of meaning and value beyond using them for entertainment. His work lacks depth, has no proper research, and is full of bias against religion and spirituality which he espouses control the masses. He imparts no meaning to synchronicity beyond mirroring one''s conscious and unconscious beliefs. The population he works with are delusional mentally ill prisoners and most of the book is about the author trying to change their concept of reality by using logic. This makes absolutely no sense considering these clients suffer from delusions and paranoid schizophrenia--how can they possibly be convinced to give up their delusions based on talk therapy? Schizophrenia has a biological component that must be addressed and what does any of this have to do with teaching me about synchronicity? A better title for this book is "How You Can Create Your Own Delusions And Call It Synchronicity". In my opinion this is a very long-winded, dry and boring autobiography about one man''s journey into discovering a pattern in his own coincidences and those of his mentally ill clients. I did not find anything helpful toward understanding synchronicity from this book and I do not recommend it.

Being a student of Ernest Holmes book, "Science of Mind," as well as the "Unity Church," whose books deal with using the mind to attain health, wealth and success, I found Dr.Surprise''s book, "Synchronicity,"
a revelation and an eye opener...One of the things Dr. Surprise says in his book, "Synchronicity," is how to create a "thought form" that will manifest for some people to see by visualizing or looking at a picture for 20 minutes a day of the thing you want to appear in your life....This technique was taught by Ernest Holmes and the Unity Church more than 50 years ago....Call it the "Law of Attraction," or "Creative Visualization," which is what this technique is more known by today....What ever you want to call it, be it "prayer," or "magnetic mind dynamics", it works.....Just read Dr. Surprise''s book for the confirmation of this....His explanation of how the mind works producing this phenomenon of synchronicity is pure genius and he has probably discovered things about this that not even Dr. Carl Jung, who discovered it, was aware of, as Dr. Surprise explains....Dr. Surprise''s book answered for me how it was possible for my father to pick up a ringing phone in New York''s Grand Central Station and hear some guy ask if a person with my father''s first and last name was there....The odds of this happening is astronomical, to say the least...It was later learned by my father that
there was a flower store in the neighborhood where this guy worked (the guy with my father''s name) and the caller had dialed the wrong number.....Any one reading Dr. Surprise''s book will be enlightened as if he had a master guru teacher before him or the Dalai Lama......"Synchronicity" will change the way you think for the better and answer a lot of questions that people have asked about why these strange things known as "synchronicities'' happen.
