Product description

Conceived amidst the horrors and hellfire of the Second World War, Mria Szepes'' novel about a man''s search for the Elixir of Life offered a glimpse of hope at a time of con-flagration. By giving a broad cosmic perspective to the events touching the lives of everyone in Europe in those years, she put human existence in a broader scale extending beyond daily life and put forth a reason for existence within the entirety of the Universe. After the war this remarkable book was published in Budapest but was soon banned by the government. Following decades of hibernation, like the Phoenix rising from its ashes, it took on a new life. It was translated into German and, in 1984, became "Book of the Month" in Germany. Then in 1985 it won fourth place in the prestigious Fritz Lasswitz award as the most interesting foreign novel. That year it was republished in Hungary, and altogether in Europe more than 300,000 copies have been sold.

From Kirkus Reviews

paper 0-9652621-8-9 Originally published in 1946 in Hungary, this ambitious and relentlessly arcane novel reshapes the stuff of legend into a compelling, if ponderous, philosophical melodrama. Subtitled ``The Elixir of Eternal Life,'''' it recounts the harrowing adventures endured, over a span of four centuries, by Hans Burgner, a 16th-century alchemist''s apprentice who murders his master in order to possess a potion rumored to confer the gift of immortality. Having drunk this elixir, Burgner is condemned to be repeatedly reborn, century after century, as a cursed visionary who sees, but is powerless to prevent, the injustices and cruelties that lie in wait for his fellowmen. Eventually purified by his sufferings, Cornelius (Hans''s final incarnation) fulfills his destiny: to prophesy, to a world ravaged by war, the reappearance of the Messiah. Discursive and hyperbolic, The Red Lion, a bulky mixture of biblical, alchemical, and historical lore (which rather resembles Eugene Sue''s epic romance The Wandering Jew), nevertheless explores with passionate intensity its deeply flawed hero''s passage from sin and error, through a world more flawed even than he, to a paradoxical state of grace. It''s a very imperfect novel, but a memorable reading experience all the same. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

I read this novel upon the recommendation of a friend. It''s no doubt one of those obscure works that would be difficult to hear of other than by word of mouth. My friend only told me that it was a very "spiritual" work that she greatly enjoyed. And as is my habit, I didn''t check out any reviews until I had finished the novel. I write few reviews, but felt compelled to after finding so many glowing reviews.

Pros: This is definitely one of the most unusual novels I''ve ever read (think Titus Groan or Dune) with a premise both bold and unique. It appears to be well-researched (I looked up some of the alchemy references) in a fresh and original voice which is all the more impressive considering it''s translated from the author''s native Hungarian. Lastly, it''s one of those timeless pieces of literature that commands focused attention.

Cons: I realize that "spiritual" means many different things to different people. I''ll also be the first to admit my lack of knowledge concerning alchemy which is the basis of the novel. Having said that, I was hoping for more mysticism, magic and a few things being left to my imagination rather than having everything spelled out for me (too much of the story felt tediously cerebral to me). In addition, I often felt as if I were drowning in overly detailed and derailing descriptions; too many characters; and too many stories within the story. Lastly, the novel would have worked better for me had it been shorter and had the author tied the beginning to the end.

A beautiful and instructional read. Ideas of alchemy are portrayed as part of a psychological mystical journey from initiate to master. The writing is great, poetic and captivating. I not only enjoyed reading the book but gleaned many insights. I would call this a spiritually profound work worth the time of any initiate looking for material that weaves a complex array of spiritual concepts into a cohesive unity of practical thought and application in a modern world. The metaphors of mental transformation this work provides are powerfully visual and stick with the reader as the story progresses through its phases of reincarnation and multiple spiritual rebirths on increasingly higher planes of consciousness.

I have a deep background in Occult and Alchemy and this book is related to neither. It is just a story; nothing more. Even as a story it is unbearable, negative, morose and boring. How anyone could enjoy such a robotic litany of snide observations, murder, and depressing scenarios is surprising to me. I believe the author must be mentally ill. Certainly the protagonist is but the reader is not forewarned in any way and must figure this out for herself. The reader may suspect as much while reading this dreary tome but will have no assurances until the protagonist dies at the very end and thinks he has been declared the savior. Moreover, something of that dementia may rub off on the reader. I myself regret having wasted so much time reading such a long-winded mashup of unimaginative traumas without any meaningful connection or outcome.
The book begins drab and grows worse by the chapter until the reader feels a desperate need for relief from the insidious wordy monotony, but plowing ahead, in the event there is a stunning turn of events (or perhaps an unexpected profundity hidden somewhere) reaches the end of the book without any reward, except for the cessation of aversive stimuli (which in this case is a powerful motivating factor). The grand finale is, by the way, grandiose, disappointing and irrelevant. The resultant book, as a whole, is not even very interesting and certainly not enjoyable.

An extraordinary compilation of ancient teachings layered and woven through a fast paced harrowing tale of gripping prose. This book is as remarkable as its author and tales of publication. Immediate Life Library, to be read and reread, shared and treasured.

Not sure what I can say which would justify the experience of reading this book - there are reviews on Amazon US which you can check out This book is a must for anyone with a collection of alchemy books - the story plots the path of an alchemist through various lifes over the centuries, meeting a lot of interesting people along the way This is quite a different story from The Zelator (by Mark Hedsel) ~ but it also has the same resonance on ones way of thinking about the subject If you have neither book then you really should buy both!
