Product Description

Presented here in a bold new edition, E. E. Cummings: Complete Poems 1904–1962 showcases Cummings’s transcendent body of work, collected in its entirety.

Combining Thoreau’s controlled belligerence with the brash abandon of an uninhibited bohemian, E. E. Cummings, together with Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and William Carlos Williams, helped bring about the twentieth-century revolution in literary expression. Today Cummings is recognized as the author of some of the most sensuous lyric poems in the English language, as well as one of the most inventive American poets of his time. Formally fractured and yet gleefully alive and whole, at once cubistic and figurative, Cummings’s work expanded the boundaries of what language is and can do.

With a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Stephen Dunn, this redesigned, newly corrected, and fully reset edition of Complete Poems collects and presents all the poems published or designated for publication by E. E. Cummings in his lifetime. It includes 36 poems that were first collected in the 1991 edition and 164 unpublished poems issued in 1983 under the title Etcetera. It spans his earliest creations, his vivacious linguistic acrobatics, up through his last valedictory sonnets.

In the words of Randall Jarrell, “No one else has ever made avant-garde, experimental poems so attractive to the general and special reader.”

Review

"One of the greatest lyric poets in our language."
John Logan, Modern American Poetry

"To return to…his poems is to return to a buoyancy and boisterousness, of course, but also to an odd bountifulness…[encapsulating] a profound sense of wonder and wistfulness."
Paul Muldoon, The New Yorker

"Cummings was one of the most spirited and original American writers of the 20th century."
Wall Street Journal

About the Author

E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success.

George J. Firmage edited many works by Cummings, including Erotic Poems; Complete Poems, 1904– 1962; and Fairy Tales.

Stephen Dunn (1939―2021) was the author of nineteen poetry collections, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Different Hours. He was a distinguished professor emeritus at Richard Stockton University and received an Academy Award in Literature, among many other honors.

My Thoughts:

This is kind of a book review, but not completely a book review. This is more along the lines of a couple paragraphs of me going off on the experience of reading every poem by the wonderful E.E. Cummings over all of 2012. That’s right. I read every E.E. Cummings poem in a year. I am quite proud of this.

I had read a few handfuls of E.E. Cummings poems before buying this book but I knew I was going to love it. And I wasn’t wrong. I was completely right. I LOVED THESE POEMS. I started marking the page every time I found a poem I wanted to reread again and again. I ended up marking 52 altogether. There’s just something about his poetry that draws me in and captivates me.

It’s hard to explain completely how much you can take away from poetry when you read it. I can see how certain poems or poets can be hard to read, but when you find one that is enjoyable it is truly a great experience. E.E. Cummings is that poet to me.

My Rating: Exceptional

I purchased this rather hefty and thick book of E.E. Cummings'' work for a friend who is a devoted fan as a gift. Her old copy from decades ago was literally falling apart with yellowed, brittle pages. She was delighted upon receiving it and marveled at the great condition the book was in. There was as silky smoothness to the pages that either one of us couldn''t'' quite place. In all, it was a solid purchase and I''m glad my friend enjoyed the gift.

All of e.e. cummings'' poetry in one place - what more could you ask for? It''s not a sit down and read it all at once kind of book - but boy have I enjoyed picking this up and randomly flipping to pages and devouring what''s there. He writes beautifully.

Unfortunately, the book was used, which I did not realize, though I probably would have ordered it anyway. However, the cover was soiled somehow and there were two sales tag stickers wrapped around the spine and part of the back cover that were impossible to cleanly remove. It took me a long time to try to make the book marginally presentable for my extensive collection of books of poetry and about poets. I am glad to have this book, but the experience does not deserve a high rating.

I’ve always been a fan of E E Cummings and fortunately this copy was on a good bargain. The original price is 50$ so you could compare the prices in the future according to the sellers. I bought it from the seller - Cloudtail. As mentioned, it was on sale for which I received a stained and tattered copy. Nonetheless being that this is my first copy of Cummings’s complete works, I have decided not to part with it. Purely for sentimental reasons, that is. As for the Liveright Publishers, they have done an amazing work. The sewn bindings are perfect and the paper quality is among the best. I loved the fonts as well. This is how a book of poetry must be published. Spacious and pleasing to the eyes.
