Description

Product Description

The Special Needs Acceptance Book is an interactive, educational, and character-building book that introduces children to the challenges faced by people with special needs while also supporting their personal journey toward appreciating and respecting people''s differences. This book offers educational information, conversation-starters, and engaging exercises that invite children to "walk in someone else''s shoes" as they learn to treat others the same ways they would like to be treated themselves. The book covers a range of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, learning disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD, blindness and deafness.

his book is much more than a book that teaches children about special needs. It uses informative narrative and engaging activities to help them develop understanding, compassion, and appreciation for people different from themselves. It lets them use their imagination and journal exercises to more fully comprehend some of the challenges people with special needs might face. It also empowers children by helping them understand the power of their actions and how they can be a good friend to others. Finally, it shows children that we are all different, all special, and all of us like to be accepted and understood!

As an adult with Asperger''s Syndrome and a mother of two Autistic boys, I''m always looking for ways to promote awareness, understanding and acceptance. This book delivers in a way no other has. I chose to purchase this book over the Autism Acceptance Book primarily for Inclusive Schools Week. My sons'' teachers are going to take excerpts from it and create a small curriculum for their classes.

The descriptions, demonstrations and group activities are all great and very concise. It''s delivered in a way that Kindergarteners will understand, but older kids won''t feel babied either. I had expected the "Walking in Their Shoes" portions to be overly sympathetic, but found they were anything but.

The only issue we''re having is that the amount of information within this book is so thorough that the teachers will not be able to use all the material in it. Quite honestly, I''m happy that''s the only "issue." I would definitely recommend this to parents as a "lender" book for friends and family and to teachers and counselors for the great lessons.

My husband and I have a son with down syndrome and I was looking for something to help the other children at his school understand. I came across this book and read the Amazon excerpt. I immediately knew I had to buy it.

It is GREAT!!!

It is a guidebook to understand how to interact with those who have special needs. It explains differences, special needs(diffrerent types), walking in someone elses shoes, how to be a friend of a special needs person, etc. The way it is written is so simple, direct and to the point. It is geared for kids but I think many adults would benefit from its contents as well.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs and wants to understand about/interact with those who have special needs.
We all come in contact with special needs children/adults at some time in our lives, this book will help take the awkwardness away in those situations.

This is an expanded version of ''The Autism Acceptance Book,'' by the same author, and does the same invaluable good work of engaging and encouraging young people to consider the world from the point of view of people with special needs while exhorting them to embrace, accept, and support others regardless of differences they might not have encountered before. Like all of the author''s books, it''s fun without being pat, and interactive without seeming overly didactic. Overall, it''s that rarity among children''s books: accessible, smart, and ultimately rewarding, and a perfect gift-- not just for the recipient, but for the giver as well.
