Review

I look forward to using activity pages from The CBT Art Activity Book - the detail and content of each page is ideal for the kind of art journaling and creative expression activities I do with my clients. The use of cognitive behavioral therapy within the handouts is a bonus! Author: Bonnie Thomas, LCSW Child and Family Counselor and author of ''How to Get Kids Offline, Outdoors, and Connected to Nature: 200+ Activities to Encourage Self Esteem, Mindfulness, and Wellbeing''

A little treasure inspired by cognitive behavioural psychotherapy ideas and creative principles. Beautiful and easy to use worksheets, which will compliment a clinician''s tool kit. Especially helpful for brief interventions with emphasis on emotional exploration. Author: Themis Kyriakidou, MA ATh, MSc FPC, Art Psychotherapist

I am neither a CBT therapist nor an artist - and yet it feels like this book was produced with me in mind. A synthesis of informative text and inspirational designs that leave me excited about new possibilities in my work with a whole range of people I''m working with - young people, adults and families. This book will appeal, and be extremely useful to counsellors and therapists from a broad spectrum of theoretical orientations, and is by no means limited to those who describe themselves as ''CBT therapists'' or as being ''artistic.'' Bravo Jennifer, this is a wonderful resource for enhancing and deepening the therapeutic encounter. Author: Paul Stockwell, UKCP Registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor

What a brilliant resource for therapists working with young people! The worksheet designs are immediately engaging and aesthetically suited to young people. Each section starts with brief helpful and accessible information for the counsellor. I am sure that this is what young people want - an opportunity to have conversations with adults on their own terms, choosing a word, a question, a pattern to work into. An important addition for the counselling field. Adults will want to use it too! Author: Dr Gail Simon, Principal Lecturer in Systemic Practice, University of Bedfordshire

The author sums up the core principle of CBT therapy in a very readable, clear an concise way... Guest''s lovely, intricately patterned backgrounds and frames are reminiscent of the current spate of adult colouring books and allow the sheets to appeal to different age groups... One of the things I love about this book is that the author''s drawings invite the user to "have a go", "make their mark" and not worry whether they are "artistic" or not... I have certainly enjoyed using this book myself, as well as inviting clients to use it to help them explore their own thoughts, and would happily recommend it to other therapists. Author: Trisha Packer, counsellor and supervisor Source: BACP Children & Young People

I was disappointed by this activity book. First, I felt the description is a bit misleading. While the book IS an activity book, I was anticipating recommendations for applying the activities. It advertises "100 illustrated handouts" but really, 53 of the handouts are coloring pages. (The book has each individual letter of the entire alphabet to color, as well as several mandalas.)

Let me first explain that, as someone who worked in the arts, I realize that the author & artist really isn''t making money off this book in that it is designed to be photocopied. So, in theory, an entire group can survive off only paying for this book once by just copying the activities. Artists deserve money for their work, and I am happy to pay for the time and effort the artist put into designing these activities.

Unfortunately, I wish 53 of them were not coloring pages. (As coloring pages go, there are far better resources out there.) This would be much better as a digital download or e-book where you could buy the individual chapters/activities. I would happily pay a la cart for this.

Pros:
-Easy to photocopy! The bold, black lines and clear text transfer well on a copier compared to other activity books that have "fade out" on certain lines. The fact that this book is designed to be photocopied is fantastic.

-the font/text choices on the activities is "fun" but not kiddish, making it easy to apply these activities to both adolescents, teens, and adults.

Cons:
-No instructions for the activities.
-"100 handouts" is misleading; 53 are literal coloring pages. (The entire alphabet, one page at a time, makes up much of the last chapter.)
-No perforated edges on pages, meaning to photocopy the book must be folded
- Many of the spaces designed to be colored are awkwardly shaped; markers will bleed into other sections, crayons will be too thick, making pen your only real option for coloring spaces.

All in all, this might be the first book I return simply because I''m disappointed in the content. If I had known this much of the book was coloring VS activities, I wouldn''t have purchased it.

There are maybe ten "handouts" - not really handouts, as the author cheaped out on binding and released the book in a tightly bound edition that cannot be flatly scanned, nor are pages perforated - that are potentially useful out of 136 pages. The rest are random color-for-fun pages, of which better ilk can be downloaded for free from pinterest.

I bought this book for myself as a patient, so to make so much of this book useless and to lie about the photocopability gives the perception that the author published this as a quick money grab. If you really have been a therapist for 14 years, don''t make "Part 2" of the book the "Colouring Collection". Six out of the book''s thirteen references should not be literature about drawing mandalas when the book''s focus is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

The book is advertised as being good for handouts. That is a false advertisement. It is not possible to remove the pages from the book without at best having a very rough edge, at worst tearing the page. The binding on the book is so strong that the book cannot be placed flat while open, making it impossible to photocopy the pages without distorting the material. I looked for a website where I could download the material to print it myself, but could not find one. In my opinion, regardless of how good the material itself might be, it is not usable in its current format.

I really like this book and most of the pages are pretty good. I strongly dislike one thing, and moderately dislike a second thing.
Strongly dislike: why are 26 pages wasted, one for each letter of the alphabet? I could easily google and print that, it has no clear connection to CBT or therapy at all.

Moderately dislike: there is very little variation in the complexity of the coloring pages, so they''re only really effective for people who are allowed and can effectively use perfectly sharp colored pencils to color in very small mandala-type patterns. I wish there was some variation for my patients who would enjoy these but are limited to the use of crayons and markers.

Great worksheets for students to express themselves. Would be perfect if you could buy a digital version or in a 3 ring binder. It says "photocopiable" but the pages don''t lay flat enough to make a nice copy.

For kids, but not adults. I can find better activities or similar ones on the web and they are free. The art is just coloring the borders around an activity. Expected more. Maybe I read the description wrong.

I have used this book with students, young people and adults. As a counsellor, who previously perceived CBT as the enemy, this book has enabled and empowered clients who find verbalising experiences hard. The autonomy this book allows for and the collaborative nature it opens up, through creative exploration, in ways other therapies do not allow for, is commendable. Format aside-perhaps publishers may consider loose ring binder?- I would recommend all helping professions try this, you may surprise yourself. Ruth Netherwood MBACP Integrative Counsellor.

The CBT Art Activity Book

How CBT Works

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on exploring relationships among a person's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. During CBT a therapist will actively work with a person to uncover unhealthy patterns of thought and how they may be causing self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. (Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness)

  • By addressing these patterns, the person and therapist can work together to develop constructive ways of thinking that will produce healthier behaviors and beliefs
  • The core principles of CBT are identifying negative or false beliefs and testing or restructuring them
  • Studies of CBT have shown it to be an effective treatment for a wide variety of mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and schizophrenia
  • Individuals who undergo CBT show changes in brain activity, suggesting that this therapy actually improves your brain functioning as well
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy has a considerable amount of scientific data supporting its use and many mental health care professionals have training in CBT, making it both effective and accessible
