A great album

One of the best QOTSA albums and one of the best rock albums ever. Bought the LP for the novelty of it. Vinyl is just another way to experience great music.

There''s live songs and studio filming of some songs being recorded both with Grohl. You can really feel his drumming presence in the live songs and even the studio ones. I read Josh saying that this album is about the trip from L.A. to the desert. The band is from Palm Desert right next to Palm Springs. Ironically, the first time I ever hear this album was on a warm afternoon, driving alone from San Diego to Temecula. It lasted about exactly the hour or so it took to drive there and each song unfurled in the album context of being on the radio and the incredibility of the songs just blew my mind. It really was perfect for such a trip. Time always can tell if an album rules or not and time has proven to these ears that this album stands way above most others. I rushed out and bought 2 or 3 of their other albums and none that I''ve purchased, before or since this album or the Desert Sessions one I got have come close to the quality of this one. They just hit the mark on this album. One reason is Grohl on drums. God bless ''ya folks.

If you think "Corporate" and "rock" are two words that should never go together, then you should thank God for Queens of the Stone Age, one of the few bands keeping rock interesting. Although their first two albums were both terrific, this one is the culmination of all QOTSA have done in the past. Indeed, "Songs for the Deaf" seems to be a combination of the riff-heavy stoner metal of the debut and the eclectic, experimental approach of "Rated R." The result: an album chock full of twisted guitars, trippy vocals, and eccentric song structures, sure to please even the most discriminating rock fan.
The album fires out of the gate with the roaring "You Think I Ain''t Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire," which gives me an uncontrollable urge to turn my car into a one-man mosh pit. From there, the goods come quickly, as the first five songs are all no less than terrific. "No One Knows" and "A song for the Dead" boast two of the most likeably wacky time signatures in recent rock memory. Much publicized addition Dave Grohl gets to show off his drum chops on the hard-driving "First it Giveth," while "The Sky is Fallin''" combines a heavy riff and laid-back vocals to great effect. Later, "Go With The Flow" introduces a pounding piano beat into the mix, and the result is just spectacularly infectious. "Do It Again" and "God is in the Radio," meanwhile, boast grooves so deep you could fall into them. I know I''ve mentioned just about every song by now, but they''re all just so damn good it''s hard to single any out. The guitars are great, and the bands multi-vocalist approach gives you a variety of sounds to chew on.
Now this isn''t pop, and if you''re the kind of person who forms an opinion about a song within one minute of the first listen, "Songs for the Deaf" might not be for you. But with a little close listening, it''s pretty easy to settle into a groove. "Songs for the Deaf" is one of those rare rock albums that actually get better with time, and manage to hold your attention all the way through.

Fans of Kyuss and Gamma Ray will recognize names on on this album. It is a tribute to what rock/metal should have been. From the primitive (though enjoyable) sounds of early Metallica, to the gritty sounds of early Soundgarden and the raw sound of Nirvana, "Songs for the Deaf" represents what rock and roll should have been if the revolution in music of the early 90s hadn''t lost momentum. We now live in an age where the music industry is confused, kind of like when MC Hammer and Warrant shared hits on the top 10. QOTSA is independent of this hypocrisy.
To top it all off, Dave Grohl (from, ah hem, Foo Fighters and of course Nirvana) is *drumming* on this album, and he manages to convince anyone that all of his hours playing axe for the Foo haven''t taken an ounce of skill from his drumming hands. He is truly superhuman.
Josh Homme combines his bluesy styles from early Kyuss and brings in new metal sounds with wierd rythms and odd tunings to create a gritty guitar sound. Nick Oliveri compliments all musicians in the band with nifty bass lines that are reminiscent of RHCP''s Flea. Dave Catching (from Screaming Trees) rounds out the band. The general effect is some ripping metal combined with lucid moments of intense and beautiful harmony, all of it well blended and symmetric.
There are many other albums to sample and enjoy from this truly original and dynamic band. Check out "Rated R" and their self-titled albums. Also, for fans who are simultaneously emphatic about Kyuss, Gamma Ray, and QOTSA, look for anything that says "Desert Sessions" on it, because it involves Josh Homme and many others experimenting with nifty sounds.

Kinda Boring

I seem to be in the minority so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I find this album somewhat boring. I love Queens of the Stone Age, but not this album. Lullabies to Paralyze and Rated R get more playtime from me. Obviously YMMV.

I have had this album since its’ release in 2002 but only on CD. So here we are in 2020 and I have treated myself to the recent (??) release of this master stroke on vinyl and if anything it sounds as brilliant if not better in the vinyl format. But unfortunately, I am bitterly disappointed. On that CD, there are bonus tracks; a live version of ‘The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret’ and another track ‘Everybody’s Gonna Be Happy’ and they are not included on the vinyl edition. And you will say, “but they are bonus tracks...” and I will answer, “but they have the cut the vocalised introduction to ‘Songs for the Deaf’ somewhere towards the end of the dialogue and finished it on the fourth side. And yet it would have fitted quite easily on the third side to make a 21 minute side of music rather than 13 and a half to 14 minute side 3. The same is to be said of side 4 which has a playing time of around 12 minutes with the size of a 7” single of unused vinyl at its’ centre. My point is this, both of those “bonus tracks” are worthy of being on the finished vinyl article and after 17 years+ of listening to that CD, you kind of expect to hear them at the end of that three sides of music for £24!

This is the album that really got the band out of the underground seen. The Track No one knows I belive still holds the record for the moast guitar riffs in a song ever and if you have not allready heard it I would do that know before reading the rest of this review...... Done? If you have liked this track then there is a strong chance you will really enjoy this album, it is a very stoner rock sounding album but it also has an undertone of Blues going on in it which really adds to the feel of this album, on a whole this is on of those album that you should at least hear before you die if you are a rock fan.

I''ve only recently started listening to ''Queens of the Stone Age''. After purchasing the exceptional ''Rated R'', I thought I''d give their new album a listen... and I was amazed. This really is the best rock album in years. I don''t mean nu-metal, i mean rock album. Queens of the stone age are tight, loud and catchy as hell. I read some reviews on this album which say the album needs a few listens, but I personally found this album instantly addictive, AND I''M NOT EVEN A ''ROCK'' fan, prefering the likes of Jeff Buckley. Another thing to note is Dave Grohl''s outstanding drumming. I always considered him to be ''average'' but from this album you''ll see he is far from. Finally, ignore reviews which say the album recording is ''flat'' and ''compressed''. The first 10 seconds of track 1 sounds that way, but that soon changes... you''ll see...
