Product Description

There are very few coaches held higher esteem than Bo Schembechler. As coach of the University of Michigan football team, he won 13 Big Ten titles and finished as the winningest coach in their storied history. But beyond the wins and losses, Bo is best remembered for the remarkable impact he had on his players and fans alike.

In BO''S LASTING LESSONS, the coach draws on his years of experience, using first-person anecdotes to deliver timeless lessons on leadership, motivation and responsibility. His distinctive gruff voice leaps from the page.

With pithy language, Bo explains that true leadership requires the compassion to actively listen to your people, and then to have the courage to do what is right every time.

A big believer in peer pressure and in always making his players accountable for their actions, Schembechler has coached athletes who went on to become professional football players, doctors, lawyers and CEOs.

From Publishers Weekly

With a style so conversational that readers will almost be able to hear the voice of the late, great Michigan Wolverines football coach, Schembechler (1929-2006), it seems as if coauthor and sportswriter Bacon did little more than push the record button and let Schembechler dictate this exceedingly unconventional business title. The coach—who earned the respect of practically every player, coach and fan during his 30 years as Michigan''s head coach—lets loose his boisterous personality in italicized and capitalized words, exclamation points and rhetorical questions that punctuate otherwise simple statements and observations. Completed just days before the coach was brought down by heart disease, this volume spells out the leadership principles by which he lived en route to 13 Big 10 titles and 10 Rose Bowl appearances. The book contains no complicated formulas or M.B.A. treatises, but rather commonsense approaches to everything from setting goals and motivating mid-level employees to emphasizing execution and maintaining focus under fire. Along the way, Schembechler shares details from both his professional and personal lives, in which he''s always prepared for anything. Schembechler''s lessons are practical, well-illustrated and based on a solid legacy of determination and hard work. (Sept.)

Review

"Absolutely wonderful. I hear my old friend in these pages, and his advice is just as direct as he was. Read it - and pay attention!" -- Mike Wallace, 60 Minutes

"Bacon had the great fortune to sit down with Bo and hear story after story, lesson after lesson. Read this book and you''ll feel like you were there. Outstanding!" -- Dan Dierdorf, College and NFL Hall of Famer, NFL on CBS Analyst

"Bo''s persona fairly crackles on the pages of Bacon''s book. Good stuff from a good man who also happened to be a pretty darn good football coach. A classic." -- Keith Jackson, Hall of Fame Broadcaster, ABC Sports

"Having spent many days with Bo, I can tell you few men inspired others to be their best the way he did. A player once made the same mistake over and over in practice, he admitted, just to hear Bo yell at him. His athletes said they''d follow him to the ends of the earth, but beyond this world, even with his passing, Bo''s words still inspire those who remember him. His voice was that strong. This book is a fine connection to that voice, which embodied, every day, true leadership." -- MITCH ALBOM, author and columnist

"If you knew Bo personally, this book is a chance to spend one more unforgettable day with him. If you didn''t, you''ll see some sides of him you might have missed from a distance: his humor, his compassion, even - dare I say it - his sensitivity. Make no mistake, though: Bo''s leadership lessons are no-nonsense, straightforward - and incredibly effective." -- John Robinson, former Head Coach, USC Trojans and LA Rams

"In an era of corporate coaches who might as well be accountants, Bo''s throaty growl and gruff but loving style are sorely missed. There is nothing superficial about Bo''s basic philosophy of life and leadership - and his lessons are truly timeless." -- David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize winner and best-selling author of When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi

Bo''s Lessons Apply to Leaders in All Fields

I am an Amazon seller. While going through books I had purchased to sell, I thought this book might be of interest to my grandson who plans to be a soccer coach. I read three chapters to be sure the language and content passed my level of appropriateness -- it did. I read a few more chapters just to be sure. I have now read the entire book. What I thought would be a book about football (which does not interest me), was exactly as described on the cover "Timeless Fundamentals of Leadership." These fundamentals are the foundation for leadership on the job, as well as one''s life and family. Surprisingly to me, I really enjoyed the football anecdotes!

By the time I finished the book, I decided each of my young-adult grandchildren should read it. First, they must read the "Reflections" at the back of the book and tell me what they learned about Bo; then, they must read the entire book -- and re-read it as often as they see fit. They are not to ever discard this book; rather, pass it on to their children.

This week I ordered and received four additional copies from four fellow sellers on Amazon.

Bacon''s books are very well written and entertaining. This is the second I have read. I was at Michigan when Schembechler was there and suffice it to say that even then, a decade into his tenure, he was an icon. It was great to read about the teams, the players and the coach. Coach Schembechler comes across as just one of those old school, solid citizen kind of guys who you know are just going to do the right thing. He sounds like a nice guy, despite the gruff exterior. And I think he maintained those standards for much of his time at Michigan. The only disappointment was at the end when he tried to pull strings to keep Coach Moeller in place after Moeller was involved in a drunken altercation in Ann Arbor. Had one of Schembechler''s players been involved the player probably would have been kicked off the team, as some were over the years with Bo. I don''t know why Bacon did not acknowledge this double standard, for that is what it seems to me.

A very compelling and useful book. I come to read this from several unusual perspectives.

> I "covered" Bo as a student reporter in 1975 at the Michigan Daily, reporting on a pep rally! Never met him personally.

> A business coach I worked with a decade later had known Bo at Ohio State, when Bo was coaching under the equally legendary Woody Hayes, and when I recommended this book to him, he wrote back to me and said, "David, it''s just like sitting down and talking to those two."

John Bacon evidently did that good a job capturing Bo''s voice.

> I''m also on the cusp of entering an executive coaching certificate program as part of a Ph.D. program I''m enrolled in. What Bo has to say is, as you might imagine, quite different from what the much less intrusive experts on executive coaching recommend. You don''t want to communicate with a CEO or a business owner the way you talk to a student athlete about to go into battle!

But many of the principles remain consistent. And Bo was nothing if not a highly principled man. I''m sure that was a big part of his almost superhuman track record on the football field -- and his character shines through brightly in these pages.

Simply one of the most enjoyable, thoughtful and even heartwarming books on life I have ever read. You may think you know Bo Schembechler but this will cause you to look at him in a completely differant light. Using stories of his days as a player, a coach and as a baseball executive Bo gives you far more insight into life and the business world then you would ever have imagined.

Extremely easy to read with lots of funny, touching and sometimes painful stories that always hit the mark with regard to Bo''s "timeless fundamentals". Give this to your son or daughter, to your Mom or Dad, to your boss, to a high school coach, to the new employee, even to new parents. I gave a copy to every member of my son''s high school golf team. It is applicable to so many people and it is that good. All you need to know is that I am a graduate of Michigan State and I still wholeheartedly endorse this book.

Disclaimer: I am a recent Michigan alum and I love my school and its football tradition. At the same time, I grew up out-of-state in a very different generation from when Bo coached at U of M. In all honesty, I had no idea who Bo was until I went to school at Michigan.

I recently finished reading this book, and I have to say that I truly want to read it again and or flip to my favorite sections. The book itself reads more like a discussion with Bo than anything else; he is talking directly to you rather narrating passively. It really feels like he is talking to you personally. Regarding the content, so many of the stories that he recounts will amaze you and show you what it means to have true character.

That being said, this book caters best to the football or business minded crowd since it focuses on the elements of leadership and how to create a great unit. Despite all that, Bo''s wisdom is wide reaching and relevant to all, so I highly recommend it.

The best part of this book, though, is the way it transcends football. Bo''s approach to leadership translates to everyone''s real life - benefits of honesty & integrity & hard work pay off in all walks of life. Great read!

One of my favorite books of all time. Gave original copy to a friend and had to get another for myself. Every lesson in the book is practical and applicable to everyday life, whether you''re a football person or not. It''s also not written in a "here''s my lesson, follow it because it worked for me" way, but more anecdotal way with reasoning as to why each lesson worked. Oh and also GO BLUE!
